어느 외국인의 매트릭스 감상평..

그냥 한번 읽어 보시죠..

매트릭스라는 영화의 핵심은 인간과 기계간의 사랑(!)이 전쟁을 끝내는 것이라고 본다. 모든 것이 멸망하는 대신 전쟁에 종지부를 찍고 평화가 찾아오는 것이다.

영화 전체에 걸쳐 각 당사자들의 `목적`이 무엇인지에 대한 의문이 관객에게 제시된다. 그렇다면 네오가 The One인 목적은 무엇인가?

인류를 구하기 위해서? 정답이다. 기계들을 구원하기 위해서? 그것 역시 정답이다.

내 생각에는 오라클, 키메이커, 페르세포네 등과 마찬가지로 네오 역시 아키텍트가 만든 프로그램이다. 아키텍트는 네오에게 `Your life is the sum of a remainder of an unbalanced equation inherent to the programming of the matrix(너의 삶은 매트릭스에서 반드시 나타나기 마련인 방정식의 나머지를 모두 합친 것)이라 말하고 A.I. 중에서는 유일하게 선택권이 주어졌다고 한다. 즉 네오라는 프로그램이 인간의 몸에 주입되어 `매트릭스 속에서 태어난 인간`이 지금의 네오라는 것이다. 실제 인간인 모피우스나 트리니티는 역시 프로그램인 오라클에게서 네오가 나타날 것이라는 `정보`를 제공받는다. 오라클이나 네오나 아키텍트에 의해 창조된 것이니만큼 오라클이 네오에 대한 것들을 `예측`하는 것도 당연하다. 여기서 주목할 부분은 오라클의 네오에 대한 예언 - 모피우스가 네오를 발견하고 트리니티는 그와 사랑에 빠진다는 것 - 들마저 모두 아키텍트가 관리하는 사건들이라는 점이다.

트리니티가 네오와 연인이 된다는 점은 아키텍트의 전체 계획에서 가장 핵심적인 부분이다. 두 사람이 사랑하지 않는다면, 즉 아키텍트의 목적인 "인간과 사랑을 주고받을 수 있는 A.I.의 창조“에 실패한다면 네오는 목숨을 잃고 아키텍트는 또 다른 The One을 생성해내면 그만이다.

1편의 끝부분에서는 트리니티가 네오에 대한 사랑을 증명할 때 요원들에게 쓰러진 네오가 되살아나며 2편 리로디드에서는 이와 반대로 네오의 사랑 덕분에 트리니티가 되살아난다. 네오는 트리니티의 현실(시온이 있는)세계에서 되살아나고 트리니티는 네오의 현실세계, 즉 매트릭스 안에서 되살아난다. 즉 인간과 기계가 사랑을 주고받는다는 방정식이 완성되는 것이다. 이것이 `Revolution`이며 이를 통해 인간과 기계는 구원받는다. 그렇다면 이 과정에서 왜 `사랑`이라는 감정이 강조되는가?

아키텍트는 네오가 결국 인류를 구원할 것이라는 자신의 생각을 믿고 네오에게 말해준다. 그도 그럴 것이 네오 이전의 선배들(?)은 모두 아키텍트와 대화를 마친 후 이성적인 선택, 즉 시온과 인류를 구하는 쪽의 문을 열어서 매트릭스의 ‘리부팅’을 택했다. 하지만 이것은 인류냐 사랑이냐 하는 선택의 기로에서 아주 ‘기계적인’ 반응이며 감정적이고 비이성적인 인간의 특징과는 거리가 멀다. 이 경우 매트릭스가 리로드되면서 23명의 인간들로 시온이 재건되고 모든 것은 다시 원점으로 돌아가게 된다.
하지만 굳이 원점으로 돌아갈 이유는 무엇인가? 그래서 아키텍트의 목적이 사랑을 주고 받을 수 있는 A.I.의 창조라는 것이다. 매트릭스를 만들고 전지전능에 가까운 기계들도 전혀 어떻게 해볼 수 없는 최후의 요소가 바로 사랑이다.

시온에서 네오와 트리티니의 섹스신은 메로빈지언과 페르세포네간의 건조하고 사랑없는 관계를 부각시키기 위한 장치였다. 메로빈지언은 케이크에 자신만의 프로그램을 삽입해서 여성의 흥분을 유발하지만 위에서 말한 서로 주고 받는 방정식을 완성시키는 진정한 사랑은 할 수 없는 기계에 불과하다. 또한 사랑은 프로그래밍된 과정이 아닌 자신의 자유 의지를 필요로 한다.

이 얘기는 페르세포네와 네오의 키스신이 왜 ‘목적’에 잘 부합하는지 보여준다. 페르세포네는 네오를 유혹한다기보다 네오 커플간의 사랑을 직접 확인하고 싶었다. 동시에 페르세포네의 ‘유혹’은 아키텍트가 준비한 테스트 중의 일부이며 이를 통과함으로써 키메이커를 만날 수 있었다. 아키텍트의 방에서 선택해야 했던 2개의 문 역시 테스트였으며 인류 대신 트리니티를 택한 것이 아키텍트가 원한 정답이라고 할 수 있다. 네오라는 자신의 프로그램이 트리니티라는 인간을 사랑하기 때문에, 즉 인간과 사랑을 주고받는 A.I.의 창조에 성공했기 때문에 이번에는 매트릭스의 재부팅, 리로딩이 필요치 않다. 애니매트릭스 에피소드 중 ‘세컨드 르네상스’에서는 지금의 현실이 오기 전에 기계들쪽에서 먼저 지속적으로 인간과의 공존을 시도하고 함계 살아남을 것을 제안하지만 처절하게 거부당한다. 이제 트리니티(인간)과 네오(기계)가 사랑을 나누는 Revolution이 일어났기 때문에, 기계들도 사랑을 할 수 있기 때문에 이 전쟁은 끝날 것이라는 얘기다. 이 영화가 인간과 기계간의 공존을 추구하고 있다는 점은 시온 엔진실에서 하우먼 의원과 네오가 나누는 대화에서도 암시된다. 아키텍트 역시 네오가 시온의 보존(매트릭스의 리로딩)을 택하지 않을 경우에 대비하고 위험을 감수할 것이라는 얘기를 하지 않는가?

Neo - You won`t let it happen, you can`t. You need human beings to survive.
The Architect - There are levels of survival we are prepared to accept.

그렇다면 스미스의 존재는 무엇인가?

스미스는 기계들 중에서도 아키텍트와 다른 생각을 가진 기계들을 나타낸다고 생각한다. 인간과 기계간의 조화와 평화를 바라는 아키텍트의 뜻이 모든 기계의 뜻은 아니며 그들 내부에서도 의견 차이는 존재한다. 하지만 기계들 대다수는 아키텍트의 뜻을 따르며 스미스와 복제 스미스들은 일종의 아웃사이더로 보인다. 이제 그는 메인 시스템으로부터 자유로와진 동시에 시온에서도 인간의 모습을 훔쳐서 존재할 수 있는 기계가 됨으로써 네오와 비슷한 Anomaly가 되었다. 네오 역시 A.I.지만 그는 인간의 관점을 갖고 있다. 스미스 내부에는 자유 의지와 함께 (인간에 대한) 증오가 존재한다. 네오에게도 자유 의지가 있지만 그에게는 사랑이 있다.

1편과 2편 리로디드는 네오를 통해 인간의 마음이 매트릭스 안에서 어떻게 성공적으로 태어나고 성장하는지 보여주었다. 마지막 3편은 인간적인 면에 기반한 A.I.(네오)가 기계 속의 인간, 스미스들에 맞서 싸우고 테스트받는 과정이며 사랑이야말로 궁극의 해답이라는 아키텍트의 생각이 시험받는 장이 될 것이다. 즉 스미스의 궁극적인 파멸은 ‘인간적인’ 면을 발견하고 결국 자유 의지와 사랑이 승리함을 몸으로 보여줄 때가 될 것이다. 네오에 대한 복수심을 갖고 시스템의 명령을 불복한다는 것 자체가 인간적인 감정의 결과가 아닌가?

While I agree with many here that questions remain unanswered, such as "is Zion another matrix", I don`t think that detracts from the main point this episode was trying to make. For that reason I will refer to the Zion world as "real" in quotes. This episode is about how Love between human and machine will bring an end to the war. Just not the end that everyone thinks!

It is mentioned several times that the question is one of "purpose". That is, what is Neo`s purpose in being the one? Is it to save humankind? Yes. Is it to save Machinekind? YES!

I believe Neo is an AI program created by the Architect, as is the Keymaker, Oracle, Persephone, etc. This is basically a given, when the Architect tells him he is a remainder of the equation; the only AI character with a choice. He is put into a human body, and therefore is a human "born in the matrix". This happens in the first movie. Morpheus and Trinity are "real" and have had information about Neo given to them by the Oracle program. Of course, the reason the oracle is able to "predict" things about Neo, is because she and Neo are both made by the Architect. Notice the predictions she makes for Morpheus and Trinity are both things that are under the Architect`s control (that Morpheus will find him, and Trinity will fall in love with him). Trinity falling in love with Neo is CRITICAL to the Architect`s plan. If she does not, he will let Neo die and generate another "One", as he has failed at his goal of producing an AI that can be loved.

At the end of the first movie, when Trinity proves her love for Neo, he is resurrected and half the equation is complete. At the end of Reloaded, when Neo proves his love for Trinity, she is resurrected. She resurrected him from her world (the "real" world), he did it from his world (the Matrix). Now, both sides of the equation are complete; mutual love between human and AI. This is the REVOLUTION that will save both humans and Machines. Why is love so important?

The Architect believes a part of his own prophesy (that Neo will save humanity), and describes this to Neo in the end. All past Neos had chosen the scientific/rational door or rebooting the matrix and trying again, this is a very "mechanical" response; it is not an irrational HUMAN response. Trying again means the scenario will be played out again - BUT FOR WHAT PURPOSE? The Architect`s purpose is to develop an AI that can love and be loved. It is reasonable to think that this is the last element that machines/AI have not been able to reproduce. This is backed up by the fact that there is obviously no love from the Machines, or their Agent counterparts in the matrix. Even the other Matrix AI characters are not capable of true love. Merovingian "writes code" to produce lust in the woman with the cake, but is incapable of forcing love as an equation. Love requires free will.

This is why the Persephone scene is so relevant to the "purpose". She is EXTREMELY interested in seeing if there is true love between Neo and Trinity. She is part of the test that the Architect is giving Neo. By passing this test, he is given the Keymaker (of course not without some requisite action scenes). The second test that he passes is when he chooses the OTHER door. The architect has set up this door, so that if Neo does truly love Trinity, he has accomplished his goal and does not need to reboot the matrix. He mentions that no past "Ones" have had such a strong attachment to a single person. Now the Architect is sure that he has finally created love, he is willing to risk it all on this bet of his. He is hoping that since machines/AI can love, this will ultimately bring an end to war. Now that love between Trinity (Human) and Neo(Machine/AI) has happened for the first time, it will start a revolution whereby Machines and Humans can begin to live in harmony. This is foreshadowed by the Councilman who takes Neo down to the engine room. He basically says that at this point, humans and machines cannot live without one another (so ultimate human victory is out of the question). The architect also says that the Machines are willing to take the risk if neo does chose the non-reloading door. This indicates that the powers that be in the machine world control, or at least agree with what the Architect is doing. Possibly the machines don`t absolutely control the matrix, even though they built it?

In the interest of wrapping up, I will not go into detail on Agent Smith, but I believe he represents a different mindset within the machines. The architect feels that the way to proceed is to bring the humans and machines together. The humans and machines want to eradicate each other. Agent Smith has actually made a bigger transformation than Neo. He has gone from a machine with a rogue agenda, into the matrix, stolen free will and transport into the human mind from Neo`s program, and is now in the Zion world. He is a mirror to Neo, both opposite and similar. He is a machine that has acquired free will and ability to take human form. Neo is also AI, but sees things from the Human perspective. Smith has free will and Hate, Neo has free will and Love. The Humans really don`t seem to have much to do in the movies at all except be sort of a Turing test for the Architect. Without non-human Neo, they pretty much get wasted by the Machines every time. The architect`s speech backs this up. The first two movies showed the successful development of a human mind born in the Matrix. The final movie will be the test of this new AI based humanity against the machine mindset. Kind of a trial by fire of the Architect`s theory that Love is the answer.

The final war is not necessarily between humans and machines, but rather between the ideals of free will or not. Smith, although he has free will has made his power in the matrix one of replication. Exact copies. Very machine like. Neo is a machine intelligence modeled after humans, and has passed the ultimate human test of love. Seems like a good part of the machine world is on the side of the Architect, and that Smith and his replicants are the rogues now. The ultimate downfall of Smith will be his newly found humanity, proving to all the machines that free will and love will win in the end.
